The Dakota Center

Founded by Philip C. Hoelle, S.M., and William Hoben, the Dakota Center is in its sixth decade of serving Dayton. Our Marianist family support of DC has taken many forms over the years, and the Dakota Center is eager for our coordinated family involvement.

As a Marianist family we have discerned that we will specifically support the Spring Baby Shower and National Night Out.

  • Community Baby Shower (SPRING): The theme is “Everyone Reach One” and the goal is to provide new and expectant mothers with everything they might need for a baby: crib, mattress, car seat, clothing. The Dakota Center partners with Dayton Children’s and Premier Health for this event, and they will need help preparing the items prior to the event and helping at the event.

  • National Night Out – (First Tuesday in August):  They have a cookout and provide school supplies to families who attend and members of law enforcement and the mayor stop by to visit with those who attend. The Marianist family can help with donations of school supplies and people to help prepare for the cookout and to serve food at the cookout.

Look for more detailed information about how you can participate in these two programs in our monthly newsletter.

If you wish to be more involved as an individual or a Marianist community, please visit the Dakota Center website to get involved: https://dakotacenter.org/

Other opportunities to support the Dakota Center are included below. Please contact The Dakota Center staff if your community would like to support any of these initiatives:

Event Help:

  • Christmas Party (WINTER - December) – This is the most popular event.  It will be a drive-thru again in 2023, and they take 100 registrations (approx. 300-500 people) for families to support. The Dakota Center partners with churches and other groups to gather donations to give to families. Stockings are stuffed with goodies, age & gender appropriate gifts, food like canned goods and gift cards.  Then each person pulls a gift from the grab bag, which ranges from $20 gift cards to vouchers to help with gas, water, or electricity. They need help prior to the event preparing items and volunteering at the event.

  • Food Pantry (MONTHLY) – This work is in collaboration with The Foodbank on the 3rd Thursday of every month.  The Foodbank provides food based on what they are given and it is not necessarily what people need.  We’re hopeful some Marianist lay communities may be able to help fill these requests and/or help distribute the food on the 3rd Thursday each month.

Daily Programming & Fundraising Help:

  • Tutoring students through the After School Homework Club from 2-6 pm, Monday - Friday.

  • Assisting with a Wellness Program for Seniors, 55 and older.

  • Administrative help like preparing mailings for fundraisers.
